Project
Chimelb

Finca Chimelb is a unique 4,500-hectare farm in Lanquín, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. Itis the largest cacao farm in Alta Verapaz with currently 250 hectares of cacao cultivation. Specialty coffee, rubber and cardamom are also grown, and 2,300 hectares of natural forest are also currently being protected. The farm employs approximately 400 workers across all crops on average. The farm espouses environmentally friendly cultivation, planting shade crops like rubber trees to control soil erosion, planting cover crops like Brachiaria grass, and reproducing beneficial fungi to restore previously deforested land and degraded pastures. Beyond the climate benefits expected from the project, 12Tree has also partnered up with a well-established rural NGO, Heifer International, to implement the CARCAO FOREST project, an initiative that works with local subsistence families and surplus and producer associations, to strengthen diversified livelihoods in communities adjacent to the farm and in one of the most important value chains of the municipality of Lanquín.
