Cintai Tioman
This long-term community-based programme is a first in Malaysia.
The project was started in 2014 to protect the coral reefs around Tioman and to improve the livelihoods of the local community.
The end goal is to ensure sustainable use of the island’s natural resources for the benefit of all stakeholders.
The core programmes of Cintai Tioman is coral rehabilitation which includes coral monitoring, rehabilitation, maintenance and predator and threats removal, training the local community to do marine conservation work and being part of the Tioman Marine Conservation Group (TMCG), advocating and implementing sustainable tourism practices via Green Fins and Green Hotels assessment and educating and spreading awareness on marine ecosystems to the general public.
