Project name: Nepal Improved Cookstoves
Location: Various districts in Nepal
Technology: Improved cookstoves
Standard: Gold Standard
Estimated carbon removal: ~200,000 tonnes of CO2 removed from 15,000 Cookstoves over five years
Impact highlights: Health improvement, women empowerment, economic development
Why Improved Cookstoves in Nepal:
The villages in this area of Nepal depend on the traditional three-stone cooking method for daily sustenance. This method requires significant time and energy to gather fuel (firewood) and exposes predominantly women and children to toxic smoke and particulates.
This project benefits both the stove recipients and global carbon emission reduction goals by providing improved cookstove technology. Improved cookstoves emit less smoke and particulates and require 50% less firewood, improving living conditions and time for other economic or educational activities.
Impact:
Health
Women and children living in extreme poverty are at the highest risk for adverse health outcomes from indoor air pollution (IAP) as their daily activities, such as cooking, expose them to smoke for several hours a day. Improved cookstoves significantly reduce smoke, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter, drastically improving air quality.
Gender equality
Improved cookstoves considerably reduce the need for firewood and, therefore, the time required to collect it. Women and children are predominantly responsible for gathering wood and conducting household chores, so the improved cookstoves significantly reduce the time dedicated to these activities.
Supporting the community
Numerous employment opportunities are created to distribute, maintain, and periodically monitor the cookstoves. These jobs are created locally and often include specialized training, which provides long-lasting skills in needed fields. Creating jobs and providing training directly contributes to poverty eradication.
Third-party entities monitor and verify the project outcomes and register them with globally recognized standards. In addition, our project development experts conduct regular site visits to maintain relationships and hold stakeholder consultations.
