El Salado Wildlife Reserve, Guatemala

El Salado is a 25-hectare private wildlife reserve, owned by the Guatemala NGO Asociacion Rescate y Conservacion de Vida Silvestre/WIldlife Rescue and Conservation Association (ARCAS). It was purchased by ARCAS in 2008 with the support of the SPN fund of the Netherlands Committee of the IUCN, the Disney Conservation Fund and the HSI Wildlife Land Trust. It consists of 18 hectares of dry tropical forest (the majority of which was, at the time of purchase, pasture for cattle) and 7 hectares of mangrove wetlands and lagoons (which includes a Maya archeological site). With the help of the WWF EFN fund and the Van Tienhoven Foundation, ARCAS has since fully reforested the reserve and will be developing it as a research station and host birdwatching tours. It is located on the northern edge of the Hawaiii Multiple Use Area (4109 hectares) in Chiquimulilla, Santa Rosa, a protected area administered by ARCAS in conjunction with local community organizations.
