Challenge: Accelerating the energy transition

In 2018, Switzerland had a greenhouse gas footprint, per capita, of about thirteen tons of CO2 equivalents, which exceeded the average of EU countries. To meet the Paris Agreement, a shift to a more sustainable way of production and consumption of energy is urged, alongside the prompt implementation of the energy transition plans. While diverse activities have emerged contributing to target specific domains such as energy production, mobility, or housing, a systemic and participatory approach is still lacking, including all sectors that emit greenhouse gases. In this context, urban areas and rural regions are facing vastly different challenges to achieve energy transition. Furthermore, technological, social, and financial innovations need to be collectively designed and implemented at the local level.
