Project
Heritage area Ewald 5

The Ewald 5 project focuses on the ecological restoration of a former mining site in the heart of Germany’s Ruhr region, an area heavily influenced by industrial history. Spanning 8.3 hectares, the project aims to transform industrial brownfields into biodiverse open-land habitats and near-natural mixed forests. The overarching goal is to enhance long-term ecological diversity and create secure habitats for endangered species. A central feature of the initiative is the “Biodiversity Forge,” an innovative habitat concept supporting building-dwelling fauna. Invasive species management ensures the establishment and growth of native plants, contributing to the area’s ecological balance. Regular monitoring assesses progress, guiding adaptive management to achieve restoration goals effectively. With the creation of habitats such as wetlands, ruderal areas, and forests, the project achieves high ecological heterogeneity. Beyond environmental restoration, the site is envisioned as an educational and recreational resource for the local community. The initiative also addresses climate protection by sequestering carbon in soils and vegetation, contributing to global environmental objectives. The long-term commitment to monitoring and development over more than 100 years underscores the sustainability of this effort. Sponsors have the unique opportunity to support a pioneering project that harmonizes ecological, social, and economic goals, setting a benchmark for sustainable land use.
