Site 1 is a mixed exotic and indigenous stand, which was subdivided into two sections, 1A and 1B.
Plot 1A is a mixed young regrowth stand with a few large exotic “nurse trees” (especially blackwood, Acacia melanoxylon). The stand runs alongside the stream where well established Rubus sp.(blackberry) patches have formed on the forest edges. Besides managing the Rubus sp. (first via test plots using herbicide application on clusters far away from the river), this site has had the least amount of clearing/thinning done. The few nurse trees were ring barked to encourage regeneration of forest species. A total of 300 trees were planted 2-3 meters apart in a mixed-species layout.
Plot 1B is a young invader plant stand (Acacia melanoxylon and Solanum mauritianum), with scattered mature exotic trees and large areas dominated by Rubus sp., which cover roughly 50% of this plot. A few mature indigenous trees can be found throughout the plot (Podocarpus latifolius, Searsia chirindensis, Halleria lucida, Rapanea melanophloeos), with small clusters of young indigenous seedlings germinating around them. A total of 544 trees were planted, including 70 mature (> 1.3m tall, ~4 years old) Afrocarpus falcatus trees, 3 x Olea europaea africana and 6 x Sersia chirindensis.
Year planted = 2020
Total trees planted = 844 trees
Hectares restored = 0.27 Hectares
