Sisonke City farm, is a grass roots, ground up urban farming initiative that sprouted from the COVID 19 emergency tented camp established for the homeless during lock down by the City of Ethekweni's Safer City department , mandated to develop programs to address the challenge of homelessness in the City.

A small group of residents, started growing salad greens and vegetables. With the support of a local NGO, Bioregional SA, this project grew into an exemplary demonstration of circular economy and sustainable development principles, collecting food waste from local hotels and restaurants, composting on site, and supplying fresh produce to local hotels and restaurants.

The HGZ has supported the development of Sisonke City Farm, through the development of key infrastructure, such as a nursery space, a shipping container, water catchment and storage infrastructure, irrigation systems, packing and processing space, as well as an amphitheatre for small events, and educational workshops. The biodiversity gardens feature a diverse range of indigenous medicinal plants, many of which are threatened by overharvesting in the wild, as well as a range of fruit trees contributing to productivity and diversity of the space.
