The Greenpop Foundation NPC is an award-winning registered non-profit organisation headquartered in Cape Town, South Africa. We work to restore ecosystems and empower environmental stewards through reforestation, urban greening, sustainable development, and environmental art projects across Sub-Saharan Africa. Greenpop was founded in 2010 and has since planted over 119,000 trees and educated over 132,000 active citizens across South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, and Tanzania.
As part of their sustainability program and mission statement of "Field Green With Grass, Not Glass", Heineken aims to mitigate their environmental impact and improve urban aesthetics. This is done by sponsoring projects which beautify urban spaces whilst being aware of their socio and ecological impact relating to glass bottle waste.
By taking a community-centric based approach this project promotes a deeper involvement from the ground up ensuring it's success and longevity.
Primary Beneficiary
Speaklife Youth Movement
Greenpop, under the Heineken Green Zones project, partnered with Speaklife Youth Movement who offer extracurricular activities for local children. Speaklife needed additional covered space, secure storage, and a space for community gatherings. Greenpop delivered an extended outdoor classroom with a storage container and a shaded amphitheatre. The planting focused on indigenous plants and fruiting trees, promoting cultural heritage and income opportunities through ecological agriculture.
Primary Beneficiary
Phillipi Village
Philippi Village, an enterprise hub empowering local businesses and learning, lacked green spaces for community recreation. Greenpop, through the Heineken Green Zones project, designed a central outdoor space with a biodiversity garden featuring indigenous medicinal plants, offering shade and a space for gatherings. This green space helps the community relax, reconnect with nature, and rediscover cultural heritage, acting as a catalyst for future greening in the area.
Greenpop, as part of the Heineken Green Zones project, partnered with SYDC, an organization focused on empowering disadvantaged men, women, and children through education, healthcare, and community services. SYDC needed outdoor learning space and a way to generate revenue. Greenpop delivered a garden with medicinal and culinary herbs, a nursery space, and an outdoor learning structure for classes and community events. The design supports both education and horticultural revenue generation.

Go Green Go Clean
As part of the Heineken Green Zones project, Greenpop partnered with Go Green Go Clean, an initiative transforming a derelict site in Eldorado Park into a green space and community hub. Facing waste dumping and sewage leakage, Greenpop designed a biodiversity garden with indigenous medicinal plants, reconnecting the community with nature. A trench was also implemented to divert sewage overflow, improving public health and making the space safer for all.
Primary Beneficiary
Sisonke Urban Farm
Greenpop, as part of the Heineken Green Zones project, supported Sisonke urban Farm, a farming initiative that grew from a COVID-19 emergency camp for the homeless. Initially growing salad greens, the project now collects food waste, composts on-site, and supplies local hotels. Greenpop developed infrastructure including a nursery, shipping container, irrigation, and amphitheater. The biodiversity garden features indigenous medicinal plants and fruit trees, enhancing productivity and diversity.
As part of the Heineken Green Zones project, Greenpop worked with Rise Above Development (RAD), a center in Lavender Hill offering after-school programs, sports, and community services. RAD’s design features a central pergola with rain-sheltering sheeting and over 600 plants from 35 species to address ecological challenges. The project promotes biodiversity, food security, and community engagement, while using local labor for construction, enhancing both the environment and local capacity.
