Project
Towards implementing an ecological infrastructure

The Swiss Federal Council, driven by the Swiss Biodiversity Strategy and its accompanying action plan, wants to conserve and restore long-term ecosystem services by developing a functioning ecological infrastructure by 2040. This can be understood as a network of natural and near-natural habitats, consisting of core areas, like raised bogs or fens, and connecting corridors, like wildlife bridges or hedgerows. By 2024, the cantons will lay the foundation for their planned ecological infrastructure. In the canton of Bern, regionalized goals and priority areas will be defined based on the current state of the planned core and connectivity areas. Priority locations indicate where existing core areas and connectivity areas should be maintained or qualitatively enhanced, and where new areas must be established. Technical planning is carried out in close collaboration with the agencies concerned. Basic spatial data needed to design the canton of Bern’s ecological infrastructure are lacking, particularly with regard to forests and settlements. These data will be generated in the first phase of the project. So far, the method for development of the ecological infrastructure technical plans has been concretized, and the data model has been devised. As soon as the technical plans are ready, the communities, regional stakeholders, and landowners will be brought together to decide on implementation details.
