Kyotera Tree Carbon Sink Project

Kyotera is a district in the Central Region of Uganda where more than 70% of inhabitants are rural population dependent mainly on subsistence farming. The African Evangelistic Enterprise Uganda (AEE-U) is a non-Governmental, humanitarian organization that was established in Uganda in 1971 to implement several programs including livelihoods and educational support for vulnerable communities. AEE-U is an affiliate of African Enterprise International (AEI), a Christian international development agency operational in 12 African countries, with support offices in USA, UK, Canada and Australia. AEE-U owns around 250 ha of land in Kyamuganja, Kyotera district. These areas were degraded by the local communities through converting them to grazing lands. This project aims at restoring the ecosystem through increasing the carbon stocks in the area by planting trees. Around 45 people from the local community have been involved in the tree planting project so far. TREEO and AEE-U´s partnership has the goal to deliver high-quality Carbon Dioxide Removals (CDRs) through the afforestation of 50 hectares. TREEO supports pre-financing the tree-planting operations; the training and technical support for the use of the TREEO single-tree monitoring technology (TREEO App) for the yearly monitoring; and support in forestry and agroforestry best practices training and adherence to the adopted quality and certification standards. Given that TREEO offers a cooling service, they possess annual data detailing the tCO2e emissions once the trees reach a specific Diameter at Breast Height (DBH).
