Restoring degraded mangroves

Mangroves are a cluster of halophilic plant formations found in the tidal zones of estuaries, deltas, lagoons and bays. They provide important coastal resources and also play a key role in the carbon cycle.

In Madagascar, mangroves are largely found on the west coast, of which 98% are on the shores of the Mozambique Channel, and about 2% are on the northeast coast. It is within this 2% that our project areas are concentrated. Jones et al (2013) estimate that mangroves in northern Madagascar have average total vegetation carbon values of 146.8 tC/ha (±10.2) and soil organic carbon values of 446.2 tC/ha (±36.9), supporting many studies that mangroves are among the most carbon-dense tropical forests.
As a result of the inventory carried out by our team, we have identified a degraded area of 296.6 ha subdivided into 26 plots.

With more than 10 years of experience, Graine de Vie wishes to restore these degraded mangrove areas and raise awareness among local communities about the sustainable management of their environment. To ensure the sustainability of our actions, we adopt a transversal approach by involving the local population in all phases of our activities.

1)Mapping activities
We went to meet with local grassroots communities to identify and understand the
and understand the socio-cultural, economic and political pressures related to mangrove preservation.

2)Project design
We then met with the various stakeholders (administration, population, associations, schools, etc.) in order to develop solutions for the restoration and sustainable management of degraded areas.

3)Implementation, monitoring and evaluation
The activities are carried out autonomously by our local teams with their knowledge of the field and their technical skills.
Graine de Vie administrators only carry out periodic controls to ensure the optimal management of resources.

Our aim is to restore but also to protect these degraded areas. To achieve this, our activities, spread out over 5 years, are divided into 3 axes: i) Awareness raising activities ii) Restoration activities iii) Accompanying measures.
