Sustainable Agroforestry

The local communities have been looking for alternative uses for their land. For a time precious woods were logged extensively from the forest, but the unsustainable logging practices resulted in this industry collapsing. More recently, the communities have turned to cattle raising, but the environment is not suitable for cattle to thrive. So there is a tremendous felt need in the communities to make a significant change that will result in their forests being restored and their lands made profitable again. Because of lack of useful land, many emigrate to find jobs in order to support their families back home, most leaving for Northern Mexico, the US, or Canada.
The Mayan Forest Restoration Project provides solutions to these problems. Natural reforestation will restore the ecological balance in the region. The biodiversity will be restored, and the forests will increase rainfall and the retention of water in the land. The soil will be replenished, allowing the forest to thrive while also allowing the lands to be made profitable again through sustainable agroforestry and related long-term income streams.
In addition to sustainable agroforestry being introduced via native trees, a type of natural tree is attractive to an indigenous bee species, resulting in honey that is highly sought after on the global market. As well, habanero peppers thrive in the region in forested areas that are shaded. This is yet another agricultural income stream that will thrive once the forest canopy is restored.
Immediate income needs will be met with the hiring of local community members to prepare the land, plant the trees, and care for the restored forest. Long term the local community will benefit from the investment income arising from carbon credits.
The Mayan Forest Restoration Project will be life-giving, restoring the forest and native plant species, allowing wildlife to thrive again in the region, and transforming the life of the community.
