Gembe Hills
Conservation Reforestation 2.696,85 ha

The Gembe Hills site comprises 2,709 hectares near Lake Victoria in Western Kenya. This site is close to Mount Homa, also known as Got Marahuma or God Uma in the Luo language, and Ruma National Park, which is home to Jackson's hartebeest, roan antelopes, and reticulated giraffes. This site lies within Homa Bay County and near the town of the same name, which has 45,000 people.

The predominant ethnic group near Gembe Hills is the Suba people. The Suba is a diverse group of Kenyan Bantu people who traditionally rely on small-scale agriculture and livestock raising. These communities raise cattle and grow crops such as cassava, sorghum, potatoes, and maize. Unfortunately, increased human expansion into surrounding forests, combined with a lack of forest management, have resulted in reliance on the forest for firewood and charcoal production, both for commercial and subsistence use. This charcoal dependency has depleted much of the forest stock.

Eden Reforestation Projects (Eden) will implement its proven Employ-to-Plant methodology and hire community members to reforest their terrestrial ecosystems. Through local villagers' employment and the planting of 6.7 million native trees, our Kenya team will restore their environment while lifting local communities from extreme poverty.
