MONOCHOA REDD+

The project area is located in the Colombian Amazonian region (Department of Caqueta), and corresponds to about 340,000 hectares of forest in one of the most biodiverse places on earth. The conservation initiative is part of the Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Uses (AFOLU) sector, in the category of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD+). The territory of the indigenous reservation is preventing further reduction in forest cover mainly due to the change in land use due to the expansion of the agricultural frontier, wood extraction and establishment of transitory crops.

The project is expected to generate nearly 13.9 million Verified Carbon Credits (VCC) over the 30-year accreditation period (13,841,631 tCO2e from avoided deforestation and 81,751 tCO2e from avoided degradation), with an annual average of 464,024 tCO2e. Up to date, over 3.6 million tCO2 have been reduced, and carbon proceeds have been invested in the provision of basic services (ie, health, education, transport, housing, drinking water and sanitation, communications); in strengthening territorial governance capacity; in productive activities and food safety; and in forest monitoring. All investments have been decided by the community's general assembly, according to their priorities and most urgent needs.

The project's carbon certificates are aimed at the national carbon market (non-causation of carbon tax and voluntary compensation) and potentially the international market. Through the commercialization of CCVs, economic resources will be obtained to ensure the development of REDD+ activities and achieve short and long-term objectives, as well as contribute to the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that are addressed through the project.

The formulation and implementation of the project has been in charge of the communities and project developers, involving the active participation of the leaders and representatives of the RI Monochoa. Work has continually been done to strengthen the interest, commitment to participation and orientation of all members involved so that both the design and implementation of the project's activities and objectives are carried out properly. The participation of community members in all stages of project development has facilitated the understanding and appropriation of the initiative at the local level.

Local implementation is planned and coordinated by a REDD COMMITTEE, formed by community members. By investing carbon proceeds in the community's main needs, there is a strong incentive to protect forests and the environment. The community as a whole has participated in the project development and implementation, and therefore is fully committed to continue with the project activities over the long run.

All of Cancun's environmental and social safeguards are fully complied with, and the project is also contributing the implementation of various SDG. The project has developed under BIOCARBON STANDARD (endorsed by ICROA), and has been validated and verified by AENOR (Spain).
