Reintroducing traditional management to Apali Island

Apali Island consists of floodplain forests and alluvial meadows. We are planning to bring back the traditional management to boost biodiversity at the island. Introduce extensive grazing which helps prevent overgrowing in floodplain forests and creates variability of habitats for different species. It also suppresses invasive and non native plant species. Excrements of grazing animals provide a habitat for another insect species. Pollaring of willows was a traditional way to provide wood for a long period of time in the past. This measure prolongs the life of willows as well as creates living space for insects and nesting for birds in old trees. We want to introduce pollaring to the island again as an example of a sustainable alternative for wood consumption.
