Project
Plantágua

An emerging initiative dedicated to the restoration of a seasonal river (Rio Falcao), rural community and buen vivir.

Situated on the edge of Sintra, this valley was once dominated by annual crops, vineyards, pastures, and orchards. Yet most farmers gave up on their traditional agricultural plots here some 20 years ago as the soil was no longer 'productive' and the water increasingly scarce. Meanwhile, the dry landscape is inhabitted by a mix of maritime pines, kermis oaks, spiky blackberries, invasive canes, wild herbs, rhodents, rabbits, wild boars, birds of prey, and even occasioanal fires...

Objectives: The project's main objectives are as follows:

a. River Restoration:
• Control invasive species, accumulated debris and restore the river's natural flow patterns.
• Implement erosion control measures to prevent further degradation of riverbanks.
• Enhance water quality through riparian buffer zones and wetland creation.

b. Ecosystem Rehabilitation:
• Reintroduce native vegetation to stabilize the ecosystem and provide habitats for local wildlife.
• Establish wildlife corridors to promote movement of fauna and enhance biodiversity.
• Implement sustainable land management practices to prevent habitat fragmentation and degradation.

c. Community Engagement:
• Collaborate with local farmers and stakeholders to promote sustainable farming practices that reduce pollution and habitat destruction.
• Organize workshops, seminars, and educational programs to raise awareness about the project's goals and benefits.
• Involve the community in river clean-up events and habitat restoration activities.
