The Primeira Cruz 1 reforestation sites are located on Brazil's north Atlantic coast, close to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (LMNP) in the Primeira Cruz municipality of Maranhão State. The planting sites consist of a healthy mangrove ecosystem and degraded areas that require restoration and conservation efforts.

South America's most extensive dune field is nationally protected under the LMNP. The national park is known for its towering white dunes and periodic rainwater pools. Mangrove wetlands connect the Primeira Cruz mangrove site to the park's rich environment.

Primeira Cruz is home to a diverse range of bird and mammal species. Among the stunning birds in the area, the Scarlet Ibis (Eudocimus ruber), typically found in mangrove swamps and muddy estuaries, stands out with its orange-red plumage and black wingtips. The Neotropical otter (Lontra longicaudis), a semi-aquatic carnivore, can also be found in fresh and saltwater ecosystems at the site. Another unique mammal species in the area is the Oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus). Although the area around the site protects it, its population is endangered due to deforestation and habitat destruction. As a result, the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List has classified this species as vulnerable.

Mangrove forests at the site provide vital ecological benefits to the community. Mangrove trees filter water, improving its quality. Their enormous root systems safeguard coastal settlements from tropical storms and soil erosion.

Most inhabitants of Palmeira Cruz rely on fishing and agriculture as their primary sources of income. Some also practice salt extraction and cassava cultivation to earn a living. The municipality faces several challenges that prevent its economic growth, including low agricultural productivity, a lack of technical support, and limited infrastructure.

Illegal removal of wood for firewood, house construction, and the production of charcoal are the main causes of deforestation in the Municipality of Primeira Cruz. Implementing salt production and property division are two significant contributors to land degradation. The restoration of mangrove ecosystems has the potential to enhance ecosystem services and the livelihoods of the residents.
