We brought the magnificent Scarlet Macaw back to this part of his historical range ten years ago. We also committed to fighting the two factors that created its demise: habitat loss and poaching. We have undertaken reforestation activities in the area of Los Tuxtlas, but we need a strategy that will attract farmers who rely mostly and solely on cattle. This nature-based solution includes cultivating native tree species that have a potential commercial value, especially wood or medicinal uses, in combination with other native well, well-established, understory plants such as cacao and vanilla, which are also native. In addition to macaws, we are rehabilitating other parrot species and toucans that are seized in the illegal trade, and because of their age, they can be returned to nature. Until now, we have been producing allspice (Pimenta dioica) and vibrant local berry products (marmalade, fruit syrup, and wine) to help farmers earn more revenue from their lands.
