Kilifi Creek was once a thriving ecosystem, brimming with diverse wildlife and lush mangrove forests. But as years passed by, deforestation took its toll, leaving the shoreline crippled and vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
Yet, the Kilifi Creek community were not ready to give up on their precious ecosystem. They decided to take matters into their own hands and started a mangrove nursery on Gastonia beach, where 7 rare species of mangroves were being nurtured back to life.
The nursery was a beacon of hope for the creek's future. It produced about 20,000 mangroves every year, paving the way for regeneration. The community also reached out to neighbouring areas, encouraging them to start their own nurseries, ensuring that the future of mangrove forestry along the creek would be secured.
And it was not just about planting mangroves. The community knew that education was key to the long-term success of the project. They conducted outreach programs, raising awareness about the importance of mangroves and the threats they were facing due to climate change, fishery, and ecosystem collapse.
The workshops were designed to train community members to become trainers themselves, passing on the knowledge to others and creating a ripple effect of change. The 10-year goal was ambitious yet achievable - to restore the entirety of the creek and work with 10 community nurseries.
Join our community and help create a more sustainable future, one mangrove at a time.
