The Sui River Landscape covers 4 political districts; Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai, Sefwi Wiawso, Akontombra and Bodi in the Western North region of Ghana falling within 2 Hotspot Intervention Areas as defined by the Ghana Cocoa REDD+ Programme making the area critical for cocoa, timber and other natural resources management. The area is within the moist semi-deciduous forest zone and is generally undulating lying between 150 – 520m above sea level. In 2017, through the RA Olam Partnership for Livelihoods and Forest Landscapes project funded with UK aid, 2 governance structures; the Sefwi Wiawso Landscape Management Area and the Sefwi Akontombra-Bodi Landscape Management Area and a Landscape Management Board (LMB) were established to govern the natural resources in the forest corridors of the area.
Cocoa farming is the most important land use and livelihood opportunity accounting for around 70% of the landscape for a population predominantly made up of indigenous and migrant settlers. There however a high degree of degradation of the forest due to improper farming practices and logging. Some challenges identified include; increasing negative effects of climate variability and change erratic rainfall resulting in low agricultural production
