Project
Nakuru Itare Dam Water Catchment Project

The Nakuru Itare Dam Water Catchment Environmental Project is a transformative initiative aimed at addressing water scarcity and promoting sustainable environmental management in Nakuru County, Kenya. Spearheaded by local authorities and environmental organizations, the project centers on constructing the Itare Dam to supply clean water to over 800,000 residents, while conserving critical ecosystems within the Mau Forest complex, a key water catchment area.
The project’s objectives include improving access to potable water, enhancing irrigation for agricultural productivity, and mitigating the environmental degradation threatening local biodiversity. Complementary activities focus on reforestation propelled by our organization Together4trees Kenya, soil erosion control, and community education on sustainable land-use practices. These measures are vital to preserving the integrity of water sources feeding the dam and ensuring long-term ecological balance.
Despite its potential benefits, the project has faced criticism over displacement concerns, risks of deforestation, and possible impacts on downstream communities and ecosystems. To address these issues, Together4trees Kenya has engaged respective stakeholders to implement environmental conservation around the dam engaging communities in participatory decision-making processes.
