Project
Restoring the Sarangani Forest

The forest was restored using the framework planting method, which involves planting a suite of native species to promote more rapid natural succession and growth. Tree species were chosen to encourage the return of important indigenous species and provide fundamental ecosystems services, such as the stabilising of soils, maintaining the health of the water cycle and sequestering carbon from the atmosphere. A forest planted in this way can start with 30 varieties and see over 150 varieties of trees growing in less than 10 years. Working with local people, the project also created areas of agroforestry, mixed orchards, perennial food systems and annual gardens to promote food security and economic development for local communities.

Goals:

  • Restore and reconnect native forest
  • Promote biodiversity
