Project Area
The community of Aquia is located near the headwaters of the Pativilca and Santa River Basins at an altitude of over 3000m (9,843ft) above sea level in the buffer zone of the Huascaran National Park. It has important Polylepis forests that form a corridor between the Huayhuash Reserved Zone and Huascaran National Park, the species of Polylepis in that area are: P.racemosa, P.reticulata and P.weberbaueri. There are some bird species in danger : White-cheeked Cotinga, Giant conebill and Andean condor and other important: South American cougar and the Andean cat.

Project Goals
The primary goal of the project is to restore the native forest landscape in the Pativilca and Santa River Basins to ensure water security for future generations.There are 4 nurseries currently under management by the local communities, with a specific focus on Polylepis tree production. Long-term project goals include:

  • Survey of the biological baseline in the region.
  • Creation of the Aquia Protected Area.
  • Raise awareness among the local population and articulate actions for the conservation of our ecosystems.
  • Reforest at least half a million native trees in the next 5 years.
