Project
Reforesting High-Andean Cloud Forests in Cajamarca

Project Area
In the southern region of the Sendamal Micro-Basin, at altitudes between 2,600m and 3,500m (8,530ft and 14,764ft) above sea level, are the districts of Sorochuco and La Encañada. This area used to contain considerable patches of natural forests, however most have been destroyed due to shifting cultivation and ranching practices that have intensified environmental degradation. Vegetation has been reduced to small relicts or homogeneous residual forests made up of only a few different species. The restoration project has developed collaborations with local communities in the towns of Quengomayo, Carhuaconga and El, and is focused on restoring the native forests of the Sendamal Basin.

Project Goals
The main objective is to conserve and restore forest resources in the Andean Sendamal Micro-Basin through reforestation with native species associated with forests that could originally be found throughout the region. Community nurseries have been built for the production of native tree species, including Alder and Polylepis. Specific emphasis is given to social impact, where the local communities are responsible for management of the nurseries and required to meet annual production objectives. Long-term project goals include:

  • Work on the development of small projects that contribute to economic livelihoods, and provide sources of income that are sustainable for the environment.
  • Contribute to environmental awareness through reforestation activities with local communities.
