Project
Acción Serrana: Reforesting Polylepis Mountains in Córdoba

Project Area
The Acción Serrana project is located in the mountains of central Argentina, locally known as Sierras Grandes de Córdoba. Most of the provincial rivers are formed in this region, which provide water to more than two million people. The Sierras Grandes de Córdoba form a biogeographic island habitat home to over 40 endemic species with very specialized characteristics and the restoration of these environments contributes to the conservation of this unique biodiversity. Above 1500m (4921ft), the highest part of the Sierras Grandes is protected by the Pampa de Achala Provincial Water Reserve. Conservation and restoration activities are carried out in different strategic locations throughout the Reserve.

Project Goals
Acción Serrana is focused on the conservation and restoration of Polylepis australis (Tabaquillo) forests. Active reforestation is essential to restore the remaining populations of Polylepis australis, which are the southernmost distributed species of the genus, preserve the habitat of many endemic species, and preserve the watersheds of Córdoba province. Long-term goals include:

  • Restoration of patches of Polylepis forests to enhance their natural regeneration, protect soils and contribute to the province's water security.
  • Improve the cover ratio of Polylepis forests and their supporting vegetation so that it is representative of the naturally occurring landscape mosaic of the Sierras Grandes de Córdoba.
