Project
Reforesting Nor Yauyos Cochas Landscape Reserve

Project Area
The Polylepis forest restoration project in Nor Yauyos Cochas Reserve is located in the districts of Miraflores, Vilca, Huancaya, and Alis on several extremely narrow micro-watersheds that feed the valley of the Cañete River (Lima). There are four different communities participating in the restoration activities (one in each district), and more than 300 families living in the highlands who benefit directly from the project. However, the water regulation and storage provided by the watersheds impacts several thousands of people. Local stakeholders including the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (SERNANP) and the municipalities of Alis and Huancaya collaborate closely on the project and offer additional support that have greatly contributed to overall success.

Project Goals
The main objective is to restore native forests within the Nor Yauyos Cochas Landscape Reserve to reduce the risk of mud and rock slides, and increase water storage capacity and regulation - a critical factor for local communities involved in livestock, agriculture, and tourism. Project goals include:

  • Production and planting of approximately 110,000 seedlings from cuttings collected from local native forests in order to expand forest cover.
  • Ensuring water security for the region to counterbalance the long-term effects of climate change.
