Project
Improving Forest Management in Cameroon

Background

Spread over Cameroon, the Republic of Congo and Gabon, TRIDOM gets its name from the initials of Dja,Odzala and Minkébé - three famous protected areas, each in a different country. The huge TRIDOM forest covers 178,000 km², or 10% of the whole Congo Basin rainforest. The area is a haven for large mammals: it shelters up to 25,000 elephants and 40,000 gorillas and chimpanzees, as well as a host of other species, including buffaloes, giant forest hogs, sitatunga, pythons, and monkeys.

The four forest management units (FMUs) managed by ALPI Group are located in the Sud East region of Cameroon: one is located in the Tridom landscape (57 996 ha) and the three others (295 108 ha) are located at northern peripheral of the landscape, home ranges for large, medium and small mammals moving regularly from FMUs to the remaining protected areas in the landscape. FMUS are also home for indigenous people and local communities (IPLC). They go there to collect medicinal plants and other non-timber forest products for subsistence use.

The four FMUs received OLB Certification in 2019 OLB-CERT/FM-090501 and FSC Controlled Wood (NC-CW/FM-007394) since 2016. However, the development of a growing road network and public road improvement have led to many emerging threats, such as artisanal mining, agricultural encroachment, and poaching.

Scope of Work

Working together with WWF Cameroon, ALPI Group has committed to improved forest management and reducing threats to biodiversity in its FMUs, while generating revenues for local communities; improving their livelihood.
Specifically, the company is aiming to:
• Reforest / restore degraded areas in their concessions
• Reduce internally cases poaching and other illegal practices
• Improve livelihood of local communities through implementation of micro projects and improving schooling and health facilities
