Project
Amazon Wild Cacao Forest Restauration

The project is based on direct experience since 2003 through management of a privately owned Chocolatal of 550 hectares, denominated "Tranquilidad", near Baures. The aim of the project is to expand and protect up to 5.000 hectares of wild cacao stands, from further logging and to enrich them with native species, which have been over extracted. The experience will be shared with other communal owned Chocolatales of nearby villages. The endemic and endangered Beniano cacao variety, of outstanding quality, belongs to the rare and newly identified native Amazon cacao clusters, not represented in any international gene banks so far.

The project activities encompass the assessment of the tree cover and wild cacao stands as baseline data. These data will be compared with the further development of the forest over time. The tree enrichment activities are developed accordingly to the actual situation of the forest counting also natural regrowth possibilities of native species. Each forest needs its own enrichment plan. The goal is to achieve 20% of valuable wood species per hectares. These 20% should be conserved over time through a rotation and extraction management. The extraction can be accounted for carbon harvesting and offered as carbon credit.
