Sustainable Harvest Belize

Sustainable Harvest International (SHI) is a non-profit working to enhance lives and ecosystems in Central America. Initiated in 1997, SHI aids smallholder farmers to transition to sustainable agroecology practices through multi-year technical support. It has rejuvenated 26,000 acres of land and planted over 4 million trees with the help of 3,000+ farming families. Techniques like agroforestry, intercropping, soil restoration, and integrated pest management are utilized. SHI's largest and oldest program is in Honduras, where it combats the deforestation caused by logging and slash-and-burn agriculture. Given the challenging topography, local families heavily rely on agriculture for subsistence and income. SHI, with its 25-year success record, plans to scale its efforts to address environmental degradation and food insecurity, with the goal of assisting one million smallholders to regenerate 8 million acres and plant a billion trees by 2030.
