Project
Responsible sourcing of wood and furniture

Background

Williams-Sonoma, Inc. is the world’s largest digital-first, design-led, and sustainable home retailer. Its brands include Williams Sonoma, Pottery Barn, Pottery Barn Kids, Pottery Barn Teen, West Elm, Williams Sonoma Home, Rejuvenation, and Mark and Graham. Its broad consumer outreach places the company in a strategic position to drive the markets for sustainable forest products.

As part of the company's commitment to responsible business practices, Williams-Sonoma, Inc. recognizes the Forest Stewardship Council ® as the gold standard for certification of healthy forest management and sustainable timber. Wherever possible, the company uses reclaimed and recycled wood. It also set goals to engage suppliers to adopt year-over-year improvements toward higher responsible sourcing standards.

Scope of Work

As their initial scope of work, Williams-Sonoma, Inc. and WWF are focusing on impact areas related to market incentives, specifically SDG 12 (Sustainable Production and Consumption) and SDG 15 (Life on Land). The company will explore opportunities for landscape actions and interventions in subsequent years.

Under the Forests Forward Responsible Sourcing Action Area, WWF and Williams-Sonoma, Inc. will work toward the goal of increasing Forest Stewardship Council ® - certified furniture volume from 18% in 2019 to 30% by 2025. They will also address wood sourcing risks by prioritizing supplier engagement and improving traceability to identify opportunities for place-based interventions.
